Monaco // Expo 2017 Astana
The power of connectivity enabling better living.
Monaco, being largely dependent herself on energy [ and the relationships with ] stakeholders in her own network, is in the unique position to tell this story of connectivity.
Research proves that within a generation, it should be technically ánd economically feasible to provide much if not all of the global energy needs through renewable and sustainable means. When economy and innovation are no longer the weakest link, the next great challenge becomes logistics. Getting energy to where it is needed.
Firstly on a base experiential level the main spatial communication carrier in the Monaco Pavilion transmits a sense of network and connectivity, which is the first visual impression and attractor of the main show space.
On a next level, when visitors meander through the main space, visitors engage with actual stories connecting Monaco to CO2 reduction initiatives through various background stories integrated into exhibits.
A regularly recurring immersive film experience puts both the abstracted network and the stories of the exhibits in the pavilion into context.
The result is a visitor experience becoming a memorable one through a staggered offering of experience and content.
Austria // Expo 2017 Astana
"Power of Potential"
Austria is a nation of astounding natural beauty. What more; this natural beauty, in large part made up of vast mountain ranges, is also a source of almost infinite power. The smelting water from the snowy mountain peaks is constantly pulled down by gravity, forming rushing water ways and thundering waterfalls.
This is what forms the potential of power to be harnessed and converted into energy for all.
The pavilion of Austria seeks to make this potential felt and heard through an immersive experience putting the visitor right next to a thundering waterfall as part of the visitor journey.
Oman // Expo 2015 Milan
The cultivation of the environment is the responsibility of all of us – a responsibility that knows no political boundaries. The visitors are invited to explore the journey of Oman which shows the nations contribution to this cultivation and life is ordered accordingly. A nation sets a limit to haphazard methods and protect what is left of the grazing lands and water resources against desertification and drought..!
Careful Cultivation means finding the most sustainable and useful utilization for the decreasing nonrenewable resources. The Sultanate of Oman looks back at several thousand years of history of dealing with complicated conditions, for example by building aflaj to enable wide-spread access to ground water.
This care for natural resources and the hereby enabled use for nourishing the omani population is expressed by the logo of the single water drop embracing and protecting the stylized seeds.
The architecture of the pavilion is inspired by traditional Omani patterns and by its nature; cascading Wadi’s guide the visitor down from a magnificent view.
These elements have been translated into a modern architectural language.
These combined create a silhouette that expresses both tradition, openness as well as dynamics.
Qatar // Expo 2015 Milan
Without further knowledge of Qatar and the astounding developments of the last decade, one could be prejudiced about this little country. Many Expo visitors might be preconditioned to images of Oil and unimaginable wealth.
But Qatar has in fact two faces. One is the traditional and historical face: buildings that are turned inward, with thick ornamented walls, purchasing in souks and camel racing during leisure times.
Then there is the modern face with cutting edge science, research and development in Qatari universities and in private companies. Leading in design, architecture, greenery and high tech tools, Glass fibre network and world wide connectivity.
We chose to tell the story of the unexpected treasures, through a narrative of contrasts; by beginning with the known treasures;
it's rich traditions in fishing and pearl diving and it's natural resources of oil and gas.... .....and then turning to the real present and future, the unexpected.
The Qatar pavilion itself represents a treasure chest being opened, unveiling the multitude of treasures (expected and unexpected) to be salvaged and used for the benefit of all mankind.
With a strong reference to traditional Islamic ánd local modern Architecture in Doha.
Poland // Expo 2015 Milan
"Field of Dreams"
A journey through Polandʼs roots.
The pavilion reflects the essence of an old, historic farm that has transitioned through to the modern era; tales of history and myth remain in its soil and roots, evoking the image of an expansive planted field full of dreams and imagination. Remember the tales, remember Poland.
The concept of Field of Dreams is derived from Polandʼs rich farming and agricultural history: a seed is planted and extends its roots into Polandʼs rich soil and yields its harvest. The growing roots are also seen as a metaphor for “Polandʼs cultural roots”, we not only eat but we also hear the stories of Poland. Through these tales, the pavilion brings you back to being a child again, full of hopes, dreams and wonder.
It provokes your imagination in a fairy-tale world which is Poland. !
Turkmenistan // Expo 2015 Milan
As was the Spice and Silk trail a path through the heart and culture of Turkmenistan, we aim to create the visitor journey at Expo 2015 as a string of different moments, along the long area of the pavilion.
Beginning at the rich cultural historic past of Turkmenistan and walking the visitor through different aspects of cultural values.
Turkmenistan was then and still is now the centrally located country connecting people and cultures.
It is outspokenly neutral in the region, neighbouring to China, Russia, Turkey, Europe, the Arab States and India, offering hospitality to all who need it.
The architecture of The Great Kyl Kala of Merv is an Icon of Turkmen Cultural history, which is so strong in its visual impact that we were compelled to translate it into a visitor experience pavilion architecture.
The main architectural gesture is therefor inspired by this historic palace in what whas once the greatest city of the world.
UAE // Expo 2012 YEOSU
"Signs of life"
For the UAE, it had always been the sea that brought life and prosperity to the land, until at some point the discovery of natural resources gave way to a whole new future.
The Expo 2012 theme of the oceans inspired the UAE to go back to their roots and refocus on what the seas brought to the UAE int he past and what it still may bring in the future. This focus on aquatic and coastal life and the preservation of it is the central theme of the UAE-pavilion.
Symbol for this life is a huge, coral-like structure, inspired by the fascinating natural forms of the aquatic world, that is the centerpiece of the pavilion, visible from many sides.
The guests will have a multidimensional experience of this binding “Sign of Life” – that we take as a starting point from where to connect to and elaborate on diverse projects, UAE and Arabic culture and friendship, hospitality and modern media.
